Essential Precautions for Starting a Split Case Pump

Proper startup procedures are essential to ensure safe and efficient operation of a split case pump. Following a systematic approach not only protects the equipment but also maximizes its performance and lifespan.

Split Case Double Suction Pump

Preparations Before Starting Split Case Pump

StepOperationKey Actions / Notes
1PumpingEnsure the pump cavity is completely filled with the pumping medium.
2Filling via Reverse Irrigation DeviceOpen inlet shut-off valve and all exhaust valves. Slowly rotate rotor to discharge air. Close exhaust valve once no air bubbles are observed.
3Filling via Suction DeviceOpen inlet shut-off valve and all exhaust valves. Fill pump (suction pipe must have bottom valve). Slowly rotate rotor; close exhaust valve once no air bubbles appear.
4Start All Auxiliary SystemsInclude lubrication oil, seal flushing, and cooling/heat preservation systems. Run ≥10 min until stable.
5Manual Rotation CheckRotate equipment manually to ensure smooth movement. Jog motor to verify correct pump rotation. Install coupling guard after confirmation.
6Dry Gas Sealing System (if equipped)Open nitrogen inlet valve, maintain seal chamber pressure 0.5–1.0 MPa. Adjust pressure and flow per pump requirements.

Split Case Pump Starting

StepOperationKey Actions / Notes
1Suction & Discharge ValveFully open suction valve. Keep discharge valve closed or slightly open. For minimum flow line, discharge valve closed, minimum flow valve fully open.
2Close Outlet Stop ValveEnsure minimum flow is maintained while closing outlet stop valve.
3Start MotorBring pump rotor up to operating speed.
4Gradually Open Outlet ValveAchieve specified outlet pressure and flow. Monitor motor current to avoid overload. Check for seal leakage, abnormal vibration, unusual noise, and outlet pressure deviations. Address anomalies immediately.
5Monitor Key ParametersOutlet pressure, flow, motor current, bearing & seal temperatures, lubricant levels, vibration, noise, seal leakage. Record operating data. Close minimum flow bypass valve if process requires.

Important Notices

ItemDescription
Startup FrequencyPump should not start more than 12 times per hour.
Pressure DifferentialEnsure outlet pressure ≥ inlet pressure + required differential. Avoid system performance fluctuations.
Motor CurrentCheck ammeter to ensure full-load current ≤ motor rated value.
Motor SelectionIf medium’s specific gravity < test medium, limit valve openings during startup to prevent overload. Consult manufacturer if needed.

Conclusion

Following the outlined startup procedures and precautions ensures that the split case pump operates safely, efficiently, and reliably. Careful preparation, gradual startup, and continuous monitoring of key parameters not only prevent equipment damage but also extend the pump’s service life. Adhering to these best practices allows operators to maintain optimal performance, reduce downtime, and protect both the pump and the overall system.
